Connect Your Echo to a Bluetooth Speaker

The sound quality of all the newest Echo devices is pretty impressive, for both the price and the size of the speakers. But if you already a brilliant Bluetooth speaker, such as a UE Megaboom or similar, you might prefer to play your music through that. Connecting your Echo to your Bluetooth speaker allows you to do exactly that.

Connecting to Your Speaker

It isn’t immediately obvious just how you connect your Echo to an external Bluetooth speaker, and you would be forgiven for thinking that you need to look in the Music or Add Device menus.

You actually need to look in the Device Settings, either through the main settings menu, or by opening the Devices tab and selecting your Echo device from the list.

You should see a Bluetooth Devices option here. Before tapping it, make sure your Bluetooth speaker is turned on, in pairing mode and not set to silent. You will need to check with the speaker manufacturer if you are not sure how to put the speaker into pairing mode.

Now tap Bluetooth Devices in the Alexa app, and then tap Pair a New Device. After a short while, you will hopefully see a list of available Bluetooth devices appear. Tap the name of the speaker you want to connect to (if you can’t see the speaker in the list, check that it is still in pairing mode).

You may need to open the Bluetooth settings on your phone/tablet, turn it on and and select the Echo-Q5N option. Now just follow the on-screen instructions to complete the pairing.

Once connected, and as long as the Bluetooth speaker is switched on and the volume is up, anything that would have played through your Echo speaker will now play through the Bluetooth speaker. This includes news headlines, music, alarms, timers, everything!

To connect to a previously paired device, say:

Alexa, connect

Your Echo connects to the device that was last connected (as long as it is switched on).

SSS Pro Tip

Bluetooth speaker connections work best when:

– Your Echo and the Bluetooth speaker are 1m apart
– Your Bluetooth speaker uses one of the supported Bluetooth profiles (A2DP or AVRCP)
– All other Bluetooth devices are disconnected from your Echo
